BTTS: Both Teams To Score

The whole idea in one line

One yes/no question: does each side score at least once? The scoreline, the winner and the total don't matter — 1-1 and 4-3 are both "Yes"; 2-0 and 0-0 are both "No".

What settles which way

  • BTTS-Yes: 1-1, 2-1, 3-2, 4-4 … — any match where neither side is shut out.
  • BTTS-No: 0-0, 1-0, 3-0, 5-0 … — at least one team fails to score.
  • 90 minutes + stoppage only; own goals count for the side credited with them.

Not a totals bet in disguise

BTTS and Over/Under 2.5 get lumped together, but they price different things:

ScorelineO/U 2.5BTTS
1-1UnderYes
3-0OverNo
2-1OverYes
0-0UnderNo

O/U asks how many goals; BTTS asks how they're shared. A match with one dominant attack and one absent one is high-Over, low-Yes. Two modest attacks against two leaky defences is the classic low-Over, high-Yes profile.

What drives the probability

The real driver is each side's chance of scoring at least once — which depends on its own attack and the opponent's defence, not on either team's overall strength. Big favourites are often poor BTTS-Yes candidates: their offence guarantees one side of the bet but their defence kills the other. Mid-table pairs with soft defences are where Yes lives.

How Tofiko prices it

From the goal models' expected-goals estimates (how they work): a team expected to score λ goals fails to score with probability e^(−λ), so it scores at least once with probability 1 − e^(−λ). Multiply the two sides' scoring chances — with the low-score dependence correction — and you have the BTTS-Yes figure shown on match pages.

The honest caveat

Like our totals numbers, BTTS percentages are labelled "model estimate — market benchmark in progress". One extra honesty note: our odds feed carries no BTTS prices, so for this market a market-vs-model profitability test isn't even possible yet — the model's calibration can be audited, but no value claim can. We'd rather tell you that than imply otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What does BTTS mean in betting?

Both Teams To Score. BTTS-Yes wins if each side scores at least once in 90 minutes plus stoppage; BTTS-No wins if either team (or both) fails to score. Own goals count for the team they're awarded to.

Is BTTS the same as Over 2.5 goals?

No. A 1-1 draw is BTTS-Yes but Under 2.5; a 3-0 win is Over 2.5 but BTTS-No. The two markets are correlated but answer different questions — total volume of goals vs distribution of goals across the teams.

How is BTTS probability calculated?

From each team's chance of scoring at least once. With expected goals λ for a team, its scoring chance is 1 − e^(−λ); multiply the two teams' scoring chances (with a dependence correction) to get BTTS-Yes.

Does extra time count for BTTS?

No — standard BTTS settles on 90 minutes plus stoppage time only.
